Public Relations Group Connects Students to Industry Leaders

Student leaders from The Kent State chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA Kent) foster career readiness and deep industry connections by hosting a high-impact networking experience with global communication professionals

Kent State’s chapter of Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA Kent) welcomed 20 alumni and communication professionals back to campus for Communications Connection, a professional networking event, on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at Rockwell Hall Atrium.

This year, 41 students and 20 professionals had the chance to connect. Registered students included majors such as public relations, advertising, business, marketing, English, computer science and more, demonstrating young professionals need to build a professional network before graduation.

The event provided students with the opportunity to network with professionals in advertising, marketing and public relations, get professional headshots taken and have their resumes reviewed by working professionals.

Attendees enjoyed networking, refreshments and museum tours, followed by roundtable discussions on internships, workplace culture and career growth.

Vice Presidents of Fundraising and Community Outreach Co-Chairs, Alanna Dowdy and Amber Trares, both public relations majors, started planning the event in the fall.

“We had a workback that contained every detail of what to do, from communicating with vendors to inviting professionals and promoting the event,” Trares said.

Professionals represented companies from Akhia, Cleveland Cavaliers, Davey Tree, Destination Cleveland, Playhouse Square, University Hospitals, Progressive Insurance, Nestlé, Spotify, the City of Cleveland, Ruder Finn and more.

Dowdy expressed her gratitude for the support from their advisor, Michele Ewing, APR, professor of public relations, fellow board members, PRSSA members and the professionals and students who attended.

PRSSA Kent also appreciated the partnership with the Kent State University Museum and the support of the School of Fashion and the Division of Philanthropy and Alumni Engagement.

Both Dowdy and Trares are pleased about the turnout and excited for the chapter’s future.

“After the event, many students expressed interest in becoming more involved in PRSSA,” Trares said.
