Room and Equipment Reservations

Access to facilities, technology and equipment is an important part of the learning experience at the School of Media and Journalism (MDJ). Please choose the group below that best describes you to learn more about access to MDJ facilities and technology in Franklin Hall, as well as equipment rental options through MDJ’s Student Resource Lab (SRL).

 

MDJ Students

Rooms:

Selected classrooms in Franklin Hall are available for MDJ students to reserve. For classroom reservations, start by completing this DocuSign form. Upon review, the room will be reserved through University Events and Conference Services, and you will be advised of approval with further instructions by the building curator. Room reservations require seven (7) days’ notice for completion. Reservations with less than seven days’ notice may not be approved. 

To reserve an editing suite or photo studio for class assignment completion log into Cheqroom with your FlashLine info to start the reservation process. Editing suite and photo studio reservations require one (1) business day notice to reserve.

To reserve the TV studio for class assignments, complete this DocuSign form and the SRL manager will advise you once the reservation has been approved. TV studio reservations require two (2) business days’ notice for reservations.

Equipment:

Students enrolled in specific MDJ classes will have Student Resource Lab (SRL) borrowing privileges connected to work assigned for those classes. Students will learn about SRL access from their instructors. For more information about borrowing equipment from the SRL, please contact the SRL at 330-672-2468 during office hours, or email studentresourcelab@kent.edu.

Franklin Hall is open:

  • Monday through Friday: 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. 
  • Saturday: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. (access through first floor entrance on Hilltop Dr. ONLY)

All other hours access key required

SRL hours:

  • Monday through Saturday: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Non-MDJ Students

Rooms:

Please contact University Events and Conference Services at uecs@kent.edu for information about reserving rooms in Franklin Hall.

Equipment:

The Student Resource Lab (SRL) is supported by MDJ student fees. Access to the SRL is limited to current MDJ students only. 

The DI Hub and University Libraries maintain some production equipment that may be available for checkout. Please check with those offices for more information.

Student organizations seeking access to production equipment should contact Ben Davis, Director of Kent State's Center for Student Involvement at bdavi128@kent.edu.

Non-MDJ Faculty and Staff

Rooms:

Please contact University Events and Conference Services at uecs@kent.edu for information on reserving rooms in Franklin Hall.

Please contact Student Resource Lab (SRL) manager Christine Zuercher at czuerche@kent.edu for information on reserving the TV studio, photo studio, or audio suites.

Equipment:

The equipment held in the SRL is not available to non-MDJ faculty and staff.

MDJ Students

How do I reserve a room in Franklin Hall?

Can I have the room tomorrow (or sooner)?

Room reservations require seven (7) days’ notice. Reservations requested with less than seven days’ notice may not be approved.

Editing suites and the photo studio require one (1) business day notice to reserve.

The TV studio requires two (2) business days to reserve.

What kind of rooms are available to reserve?

There are a variety of classrooms available for reservation. Rooms include Franklin 110, 117, 213, 214, 312, 314, 317, 321, 339, 414-416 (combined into one large room), 415, and 417.

The TV studio, photo studio, and editing suites are available for classroom assignment use only.

Can I reserve the First Energy auditorium (room 340)?

The auditorium is not available for individual student use.

What hours are the editing suites available to reserve?

During the Fall 2022 semester:

  • Monday/Wednesday:  9-11 a.m.; 2-11 p.m.
  • Tuesday/Thursday: 9-11 a.m.; 1-2 p.m.; 5-11 p.m.
  • Friday/Saturday: 9 a.m. - 11 p.m.
What hours is the photo studio available for reservation?

My student organization needs to use production equipment. Can I check out equipment from the SRL?

Student members of official Kent State Student Media partners can check out equipment through the SRL under the auspices of their specific organization. Students should check with their media partner’s leadership for further guidance on parameters for access. Student members of the Flash Film Commission (FFC) require written approval from the FFC president to check out equipment.

Non-Student Media organizations do not have access to the SRL.

I am an MDJ alum. Can I reserve equipment through the SRL?
