Activism Scholarship Awarded in Honor of 15th Anniversary of Media Ethics Workshop

Kent State Junior Theater Studies Major Kelly Harper is the winner of the $2,500 Activism and Advocacy Scholarship established to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the Poynter KSU Media Ethics Workshop.

Harper’s entry, a script for a play titled “My Dear Aunt Flow” about women’s experiences with menstruation, was recognized as the winner in the scholarship competition recognizing outstanding student storytelling about social movements, activism or advocacy.

Harper, of Cincinnati, said in her entry that she has “always been very passionate about women’s health and education, women’s issues, and intersectional social justice” and that she was able to merge that interest with her theater major to produce the play.

The Activism and Advocacy Scholarship was created to celebrate the 15th anniversary (2019) of the Poynter KSU Media Ethics Workshop through the generosity of the Media Law Center for Ethics and Access, the Arnold and Dorothy Danes First Amendment Fund, the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, the College of Communication and Information and individual donors.
