Academic Advising (Information for Parents)

It's Time for Your Student's Academic Advising Appointment

  • Advisors are crucial in connecting students to resources and opportunities available to them, answering any questions, and helping students identify and meet their academic goals.
  • The student’s academic advising appointment will take place on DAY TWO of the selected DKS date.
  • The TIME of the advising appointment will be sent to the student's Kent State email two days before the orientation date.
  • As a reminder, students will meet virtually with their academic advisor.

  Warning!

  • Students must be scheduled for a DKS orientation date to meet with an academic advisor!
  • Students register via the new student checklist.

1. Appointment Preparation

To make sure the student is ready for their appointment:

  • Students will download Microsoft Teams on their phone or computer, or both. This is the platform students will use to meet virtually with their advisor.
  • The TIME of the advising appointment will be sent to the student's Kent State email two days before the orientation date.
  • Students will need to complete placement tests before their advising appointment. Placement assessments should be completed at least two days before advising or as soon as possible.
    • The new student checklist will indicate any placement needs.

2. Advising Appointment Expectations

This is what the student can expect in the advising appointment:

  • This one-on-one meeting is between the new student and their advisor and is the first opportunity a student will have to develop a relationship with their college.
  • The academic advising time is scheduled for your student between the hours of 9AM - 4PM.
    • If the student cannot meet at the time indicated in their email, they may be asked to reschedule their orientation date.
    • They can expect to spend approximately one hour meeting one-on-one with their advisor.
  • They should be prepared to have a conversation with their advisor. Their advisor wants to get to know them.
  • They will discuss Fall 2021 courses and semester goals.
  • They will register for Fall 2021 courses.

3. Student Support System, Your Guide to KSUview

We recognize that, to succeed in college, all students will need a support system - and that includes you! You may find it helpful to have access to some of your student’s information.

  • KSUview provides a way for each student to designate individuals and grant them permission to view information of their choosing.
  • Students can designate as many individuals as they like! Designees will be assigned their own login and your student can change permissions at any time.
  • The following information can be shared in KSUview:
    • Admissions
    • Financial aid
    • Their personal information
    • Course registration
    • Other information about your student’s account such as grades and bills
    • View a sample screenshot
  • KSUview grants viewing access only. Students will still need to complete a FERPA release for a designee to speak to the university about their information.
    • Once your student grants you access as a designee, you can read this document for next steps.
    • Only the student can grant access to a designee. This is optional for all students
