2020: A Kent State Social Media Year in Review

Despite the ups, downs and uncertainties of this unprecedented year, the Kent State community has made it through, together. (Flashes Take Care of Flashes, after all.)

For this final blog post of 2020, we wanted to take a look back at the posts that resonated most with our audiences this year.

Here’s some background on some of the top posts highlighted in the video above:

FLASHES SAFE SEVEN

Communication was key in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, and social media played a huge role in making sure the Kent State community was informed. We leveraged our Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Snapchat and Twitter accounts to share information about testing availability, the Flashes Safe Seven principles and other updates that were available.

MAY 4 50TH COMMEMORATION

This year also marked the 50th anniversary of the shootings of May 4, 1970. Information about the virtual commemoration, earned some of the highest engagement of the year. A gallery with throwback photos was Kent State’s most-liked post ever on Instagram, receiving more than 4,000 likes.

IPROMISE PARTNERSHIP

An exciting item this year was the announcement of the partnership between Kent State and the Lebron James Family Foundation. That post earned 3,077 likes on Instagram. A video featuring the announcement earned nearly 27,000 views.

PHOTO OF THE WEEK

2020 also included some amazing Photos of the Week! These photos showed how Kent State adapted to a new way of life in 2020. The top Photo of the Week was a post dedicated to the Kent State football team’s 69-35 win over the University of Akron. The team celebrated the win, and will keep the wagon wheel for another year.

GOLDEN FLASHES JOIN TIKTOK

While we’re on the topic of Kent State Athletics, this is a great chance to highlight the launch of their TikTok account. The account features a variety of videos highlighting Kent State’s athletic programs. The top-performing post featured the gymnastics team.

Members of the Kent State football team also joined forces with President Diacon to create a commercial thanking the faculty and staff who worked behind the scenes and on the front lines to keep Kent State running. The commercial was first aired during the Kent State football season opener against Eastern Michigan, and continued to be aired on ESPN throughout the season.

ICYMI (In Case You Missed It)

Kent State created some other great videos in 2020, including a new commercial, a video highlighting all of the university’s notable awards and rankings, and a video showcasing the Kent Campus during the fall.

While 2020 was different in many ways, we were still able to connect digitally, and we -- Kent State’s social team members -- were glad to be a part of it. We’re hard at work on some fun posts for next year.

See you in 2021,

Kent State’s Social Team
