Recent Grad Earns First Place Nationally for Online Videography Feature

Recent Kent State journalism graduate Kelly Krabill’s online broadcast feature on urban farming recently was named the National Winner by the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ).

Krabill, who graduated in May 2022, worked on the piece for WKSU as part of NewsLab, an initiative that links students in the School of Media and Journalism with professional media partners in Northeast Ohio. She earned the national award in SPJ’s Broadcast/Online Feature Videography category.

“It's an honor to be recognized as a winner for the Society of Professional Journalists,” Krabill said. “When I reported on urban farming last summer, I learned a lot about the hard work it takes to create something long-lasting. I was even able to capture video and in-person interviews to tell the story during the pandemic. Thank you to everyone who has invested in my education and sees potential in me as a future journalist.”

Krabill now works as a News Content Associate for Spectrum News 1 OH.

The Society of Professional Journalists’ Mark of Excellence competition recognizes collegiate work published or broadcasted during 2021. The awards honor the best in student journalism. In spring 2022, five Kent State students and/or Kent State Student Media outlets were recognized as regional winners or finalists by SPJ. Read more about the regional honors.
