The countdown to move-in 2026 is officially on! We are hard at work preparing the residence halls and cannot wait to welcome your student to campus in just a few short weeks.
We know that preparing for the big move brings a mix of immense excitement and a little bit of stress for the whole family. Rest assured, our University Housing team is here to make the transition as smooth as possible. As you begin checking off your to-do lists, here are four essential tips to help your family prepare for move-in day:
- Coordinate the Packing Strategy: While our residence halls are designed to be comfortable and functional, space is still at a premium. Review your student’s packing list together and double-check our website for a list of approved and prohibited items. Our golden rule: When in doubt, leave it behind.
- Finalize Your Logistics: Double-check your student's assigned move-in date and arrival time slot. Talk through the game plan with anyone traveling to campus to ensure everyone knows the parking and unloading zones designated for your student's specific hall.
- Encourage Independence Now: Help your student build confidence before day one. Encourage them to review the Hallways Handbook, prepare for an open and honest roommate conversation, practice a few trial loads of laundry if they haven't already and learn their new campus mailing address.
- Prompt Honest Roommate Conversations: Encourage your student to reach out to their new roommate(s) before move-in day. Remind them that they don’t need to be instant best friends, but setting healthy boundaries early is key. Encourage your student to have open conversations about expectations regarding sleep schedules, sharing belongings, cleanliness and guests. If they don’t have a chance to do this before move-in, don’t worry, your conversation will help them be ready to tackle their roommate agreement.

We know this is a monumental milestone for your family, and we are honored to partner with you in supporting your student's success, safety and growth at Kent State. Safe travels to campus this August—we can’t wait to welcome your student!
