DOWN UNDER: THE ECOLOGY, EVOLUTION, AND HISTORY OF AUSTRALIA
May 20 - June 6, 2022 | BSCI 40195

Department of Biological Sciences

Dates: TBD

ABOUT THE COURSE

This course will immerse students in the “land down under” from the perspectives of ecological diversity, the evolution of the Australian flora and fauna, and the intersecting histories of two major human immigration events. We will visit four different regions representing some of the country’s ecological diversity: coastal temperate forest (Sydney, Blue Mountains National Park), the northern wet and dry tropics (Kakadu National Park), marine ecosystems (The Great Barrier Reef), and tropical rainforest (The Daintree Rainforest). As we travel, we will be able to experience many of the unique plants and animals of the country, and we will also be exposed to the history of the humans who colonized this island continent: the Aborigines, who first arrived between 40,000 and 65,000 years ago, and the British, who arrived in 1788.
