INTRODUCTION TO WORLD RELIGIONS

ABOUT THE COURSE
In this course, students will be introduced to the academic study of religion. We will examine many questions including: How do you define “religion?” What are the different ways people have understood religion? How do concepts such as faith, myth, and symbols relate to religion and reason? This course will also extend awareness of the religious thought and practices of various peoples and cultures and examine what it means to live in a religiously plural world. These skills will transfer to every work setting as our workforce becomes more diverse and global.
The course will cover nine of the world’s religions starting with the Abrahamic faiths (Judaism, Islam, and Christianity with special focus on Coptic) then moving into Indigenous (Ancient Egyptian), Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. We will use quizzes, discussions, written assignments, and exams in our course.
