Kim Laurene, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor in the College of Public
What is your position at Kent State University?
Assistant Professor in the College of Public Health
What is your role in the Division of Mental Health and Substance Use?
I oversee grants and projects related to mental health. This includes working with stdents and colleagues to schedule and deliver mental health awareness trainings both at KSU and in the community, being an advisor to Active Minds at KSU, serving as a co-director for the Student Mental Health Coalition, and participating on a variety of campus committees.
How long have you been at Kent State?
I started as an Independent Contractor in the College of Public Health in 2015. In 2016 I was hired as a Research and Programming Associate, and in 2019 I moved into my current role as an Assistant Professor.
Why did you choose to go into public health?
There are so many reasons! I get to help people, solve problems, and make an impact in the community. I really embrace the variety inherent in this field. My workday is never the same. One day I'm leading a mental health awareness class. The next day I'm analyzing data and writing a manuscript. Yet another day I'm working with students to develop wellness programs. The constant collaboration, learning, and improving make this a field like no other.
What is your favorite place to eat in Kent?
My kids like to go to Mike's Place, because they love the food and atmosphere. I really like the Rice and Bean Burrito from Taco Tantos and the Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup Cookie from Insomnia Cookies.
What is the last tv show you watched or book that you read?
During the fall and spring semesters, most of my reading time is devoted to scholarly works. In the summer I have a little more free time to read for pleasure. This past summer I was busy making my way through recommendations from Reese Witherspoon's Book Club.
What are you looking forward to this year?
I am hopeful that I will get to spend more in-person time with family and friends. It's been wonderful being on campus and getting to see students and colleagues again. This fall I'm looking forward to spending time with my family at pumpkin patches, on bike rides, and around bonfires.
