New Course: Introduction to Public Mental Health

A NEW Special Topics Course is available for the Spring 2023 Semester. Introduction to Public Mental Health is a 100% online, 7-week course.

Due in large part to the COVID-19 pandemic, the public has experienced soaring rates of anxiety, depression, and substance use. The impact has been so significant and far-reaching that many have warned of an impending “mental health pandemic.” Understanding mental health as a public health issue can better equip communities to better serve those experiencing distress.

Introduction to Public Mental Health provides a broad understanding of mental health from a public health perspective. The course will provide a background about public mental health, including social inequalities, cost to society, the global burden of mental illness, public policy, causes, prevention, intervention and will discuss the impact to specific groups, including children, prisoners, minorities and LGBTQ+ populations.

Mental health as a public health issue is an emerging field within public health that is growing in importance. KSU is among a very few colleges of public health offering students the opportunity to learn about this newly emerging and growing perspective.

Space is still available for undergraduate students! To register for this course, add PH40195.
