Catch up With the DI Fellows: Fall 2022

What have the DI Fellows been up to this semester? A recap:

Design Innovation Fellow, Greyson Byrnes, attended the “Get the DIrt on the DI Hub” event held during KSU Kickoff Week in August for incoming students. This event aimed to highlight the many different spaces, technology and tools within the building. The event consisted of multiple "stops" across the DI Hub where participants would collect an ingredient to create a dirt cup, a pudding dessert with Oreos and gummy worms. At each stop they had the chance to learn more about the spaces. Among these stops were the Reactor, Blank_Lab, LaunchNET and the DI Fellows Suite.

Byrnes called the event a success and looks forward to hosting more like it in the future.

“The turnout was much higher than expected,” he said. “We had about 160 students attend. There were so many people that we had to go to the store and get more ingredients for our dirt cups.”

Byrnes, who spent the event in the Fellows Suite, got to share information with students about the ethos of innovative problem solving through challenged-based thinking and helped recruit more students up to join the Fellows Program. The icing on the cake for him, though, was getting to be around students eager to participate.

“My favorite part of this event was how excited the students were about the space and also about this nostalgic dessert: the dirt cup,” he said.

Byrnes also got to spread the word about DI at KSU Blastoff with other fellows. There they got to interact with new and returning students who did not have much prior knowledge about Design Innovation or the DI Hub. Byrnes, along with other fellows, was able to answer questions, engage with students and explain what it is that the DI Student Fellows do.

“The main point I mention when students inquire about becoming a fellow is if they have any interest in innovative problem solving through collaborative, challenge-based thinking then they should sign up,”
