    Biography

Amy Walker is an assistant professor in the School of Teaching, Learning and Curriculum Studies. Before receiving her PhD in literacy, culture and language education from Indiana University, she taught middle school English as a second language (ESL), language arts, and humanities in the Midwest, as well as ESL with resettling refugees in Eastern Europe. Her research disrupts monolithic assumptions of students and geographies by examining the literacies students practice through resistance and activism across community, social media, and school spaces. As a teacher-educator and researcher, she helps educators and students understand how space and power interact with meaning making across learning spaces while offering strategies for fostering equity and anti-racist teaching practices. Most recently, she has published in Voices from the Middle and has presented her research at national and international conferences. Her dissertation research was funded by the AERA Rural Education Special Interest Group (SIG) Research Grant. She serves as the social media liaison for AERA Semiotics in Education SIG and organizing member for the International Conference on Literacy, Culture, and Language Education.
