Team LeBron Wins for Kent State’s I Promise Scholars
Team LeBron had a big win in the All-Star game and an enormous win for Kent State’s I Promise Scholars, a program that provides higher education opportunities for underserved students in Northeast Ohio. The competition between the NBA’s top players raised more than $550,000 for the I Promise Scholars program, which will lead directly to much-needed support for current and future Kent State University I Promise students. The funds raised by Team LeBron will support important educational expenses such as books, supplies, room and board and other needs that are critical to the success of I Promise students residing on the Kent State campus.

Meet the I Promise Scholars
Jaime Meeker - Eyes On The Prize
When Jaime Meeker, 19, began the I Promise program in the third grade, he had his eyes on the prize – one day attending college and earning a degree. The graduate of Akron’s Firestone High School who is now in his second semester at Kent State University draws on his ability to persevere and work toward his goals, all skills and abilities that Meeker learned from his family and developed via the I Promise program.
Don’Marie Reid - Family Is Always With Us
As Don’Marie Reid spent most of her childhood in the I Promise program, she learned many important skills and through the program earned free tuition to Kent State University and free room and meals for one year. Without the Kent State scholarship Reid may not have had the opportunity to live on a college campus. Her first year at Kent State has opened a whole new world for her.
Daysi Sandoval-Alvarado - Stepping Out Of My Comfort Zone
Participating in the I Promise program and attending Kent State University has inspired Daysi Sandoval-Alvarado to take giant steps beyond her comfort zone. Naturally reserved, Sandoval-Alvarado, a native Honduran who was raised in Akron, has pushed herself during her first year at Kent State to meet new people at Lake Hall, where she resides, as well as joining the Salsa Club. Just moving to Kent to attend classes from her Akron home was a big step for Sandoval-Alvarado, who is the youngest child of six in her close knit family.
Alex Knight - Making My Family Proud
Alex Knight, 18, is a first-generation college student who thought it was an impossible dream to attend college, until Kent State University made the commitment to provide four years of tuition and one year of room and meals for I Promise scholars. It made the dream possible, but he still had to see it to believe it.
