As of January 1, 2017, Kaltura replaced KSUtube as Kent State’s online video platform, a service that enables users to upload, convert, store and play back video content via the Internet. The implementation began in May 2016 with many of the 48,000 video migrations occurring throughout summer. The retirement of KSUtube is bittersweet for its early adopters who have been using the application for nearly ten years, but they are pleased about what the new platform has to offer.
- Kaltura’s seamless integration with Blackboard Learn will benefit both faculty and students.
- The platform is Cloud based – meaning that it stores and presents video files on the internet – resulting in better performance and stability.
- Kaltura utilizes extensive distribution features such as channels and playlists, allowing faculty to easily organize and share content for more specific audiences.
- Kaltura also utilizes a module called CaptureSpace, which allows users to record audio, video, Webcam footage, and screen captures with ease.
- Recording functions can be combined in many ways, including using multiple cameras and split screens, simplifying the process of producing videos.
“KSUtube served its purpose well, but it does not have the advanced capabilities of Kaltura,” says James Raber, Director of Information Services and developer of the first iteration of KSUtube. “The addition of deep integration with our LMS, simple video editing, and consistent availability of support make Kaltura a platform that can grow with Kent State University.”
The selection of the new platform was a joint process by a committee of university representatives from the College of Communication and Information, College of Business Administration, Office of Continuing and Distance Education, Student Accessibility Services, University Libraries, Division of Information Services, and others.
