Dr. Robert Pettys-Baker

Dr. Robert Pettys-Baker graduated with a Ph.D. in Human Factors and Ergonomics from the University of Minnesota. He previously received a B.S. in Apparel Design and M.S. in Apparel Studies from the University of Minnesota. Robert’s research interests center on the design of wearable technologies from a soft goods perspective, with an emphasis on creating devices that consider both the functional and psychological/emotional impact devices have on users. His previous work has spanned from developing medical devices and other novel wearable technologies to researching social aspects of dress and consumer attitudes towards design and retail. His dissertation work focused on questioning conventional methods for producing soft robotic skin stretch devices on the body; detailing key design metrics for improved functionality of skin stretch haptics on the body. Robert’s ultimate goal is to better link the design and engineering of wearable technologies together to create functionally viable devices that embitter people’s lives.
