Welcome to the Educational Technology Program at Kent State University. Our program is dedicated to exploring and advancing the use of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), extended reality (AR, VR, MR), robotics, video games, simulations, 3D printing, and eye-tracking in educational and training settings. We aim to equip students with the skills needed to harness these cutting-edge technologies to enhance learning, instruction, and human performance across diverse contexts, including online, hybrid, and in-person education, K-12 and higher education, as well as applications in industry, military, and healthcare settings. We also offer comprehensive coursework for those interested in pursuing a career in instructional design.

Our mission is to lead in the integration of artificial intelligence, advanced educational technologies, and instructional design practices, preparing educators, trainers, and leaders to transform learning experiences through the effective, ethical, and innovative use of educational technology.

The Educational Technology (ETEC) program offers a variety of graduate programs to advance your career in using technology, broadly defined, for learning and teaching:

Teaching and Learning with Technology: Undergraduate Minor and Undergraduate Certificate

The program offers an undergraduate minor (15 credits) and an undergraduate certificate (15 credits) in Teaching and Learning with Technology. Students will become proficient at using learning technologies to support instruction in a variety of contexts, from online and in-person education to communication and health.

Educational Technology M.Ed.

You can obtain a master’s degree in education (M.Ed.) in Educational Technology (30 credits), the appropriate degree for school teachers, corporate trainers, and others interested in effectively using information and communications technologies to enhance learning.

Computer Science Endorsement

As part of the M.Ed. degree you can also add a Computer Science Endorsement to your existing teaching license. This is available as a concentration within the overall ETEC master’s degree. For those who already have a master’s degree in an appropriate field, the endorsement-only program provides the endorsement for 15 credit hours.

Teaching, Learning and Curriculum Studies PhD: Educational Technology focus

The program offers a doctoral focus in Educational Technology as part of the Ph.D. program in Teaching, Learning and Curriculum Studies (72 credits). This degree will help provide you with the skills to become a professor or researcher or to enhance your credentials in a field where working with new communications and information technologies is critical to success.

Interprofessional Leadership Ed.D.: Educational Technology concentration

The program also offers a doctoral concentration in Educational Technology as part of the Ed.D. program in Interprofessional Leadership (72 credits). This degree prepares leaders in educational technology who intend to facilitate positive change and implement educational technology initiatives in educational, business, and community settings.

Dual degree: Educational Technology / School Library Media

You could also obtain a dual degree that combines an M.Ed. in Educational Technology with an M.L.I.S. in School Library Media (K-12) for 57 credit hours. The M.Ed./M.L.I.S. dual degree program leads to a multi-age initial licensure in school library media. This program prepares students to work in all types of libraries, including school libraries.

The master’s, Ph.D. and Ed.D. degrees and Computer Science endorsement are all available entirely online.
