Director of CUDC Reflects on New Cleveland Construction

The progression and growth of downtown Cleveland continues as the grand opening of The Lumen building reflects the historic beauty of the city.

The Lumen is a new luxury and pet-friendly apartment building in Cleveland located near Playhouse Square.

Terry Schwarz, director of the Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative (CUDC) at Kent State, spoke with News 5 Cleveland about the excitement surrounding the construction of the building and the impact it will have on downtown, despite the pandemic.

The Lumen was constructed not far from the CUDC, and Schwarz has watched its progress eagerly.

“There’s something about big new buildings coming out of the ground that shows a certain optimism for the future,” said Schwarz.

The CUDC, part of Kent State’s College of Architecture and Environmental Design, is an innovative, non-profit community design center committed to a sustainable, vibrant and inclusive urban future that combines client-based projects, applied research, teaching and advocacy to impact urban design and policy.
