Alumna Emilia Sykes Headed To Congress

Kent State Graduate To Become Second Golden Flash in U.S. House of Representatives

There's more blue and gold headed to Washington D.C.!

Emilia Sykes, who earned a bachelor's degree in Psychology, won the race for Ohio's 13th congressional district, which includes the Kent and Trumbull campuses and the Twinsburg Academic Center. On Nov. 8, 2022, Sykes, a longtime Akron Democrat defeated Madison Gesiotto Gilbert, a Republican newcomer originally from Stark County.

Born and raised in Akron, Sykes was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives to represent her hometown (OH-34) in November 2014. Sykes served in Democratic leadership for four years, holding the positions of Assistant Whip, Minority Whip and Minority Leader.

Sykes joins Darrell Issa (R, CA-50), who earned an associate's degree from Kent State University at Stark and was first elected to Congress in 2001.
