5-Week ONLINE Course for Fall 2020!

Evolution of Empire Part 1

This survey-style course examines a variety of topics in the history of the Italian peninsula from the Roman Empire through the Renaissance. Students learn about major developments in intellectual history related to politics, art, literature, theology and philosophy as they focus on significant turning-point moments from the fall of Rome to the Middle Ages; and from the Middles Ages to the Renaissance.

Students study this cultural transformation in the context of the historical evolution of Italy, from the early medieval sacred Roman Empire to the multifaceted late medieval world with city state republics and princely court cities. Students also explore the pervasive role of the papacy and Western Catholicism. A close study of critical texts and contexts help students to understand the history of Western ideas through the prismatic thought many of its greatest thinkers up through the age of the rebirth of classical antiquity.

This course is open to all students of any major interested in Florentine history, philosophy, literature, politics and art. Prerequisite: sophomore standing.
