Adventure Trips

We offer unique adventure trips each semester in Ohio and around the country. All trips are designed to be beginner friendly with a focus on learning new outdoor skills. Trips can range from a few hours to multiple days/nights. Types of trips we have offered in the past include: hiking, skiing/snowboarding, kayaking, backpacking, mountain biking, rock climbing, rafting, rappelling, camping, and more.

A pre-program email will be sent to all registered participants. This email will contain an introduction from the staff leaders, information about what to bring, what to wear, an agenda, and other pertinent details. All trips and clinics require a minimum number of participants. The Adventure Center will contact all registered participants if the program will be canceled. All trips are a level 1 difficulty with no experience necessary and mild physical exertion unless noted. Contact Kennedy at actrips@kent.edu with any questions.

Cancellation Policy: No refunds will be given within 7 days of the program.

          Spring Semester Trips

          Ray’s Indoor Bike Park Trip

          Whether you are a regular biker or looking for somewhere to start, every level of rider is welcome to join us on a trip to Ray’s Indoor Bike Park this spring. It will be a fun & adventure-packed evening loaded with bike courses, adrenaline, adventure, and a chance to meet fellow bikers! Entrance ticket and bikes are provided. You are welcome to bring your own bike if you prefer; BMX or mountain bikes are recommended but not required. However, helmets are required, they are available for sale but not rent at Ray’s. More information will be provided the week of the event once registered. Transportation is provided.

          Snowshoe Hike

          Want to enjoy the gorgeous snowy weather outside? Join the Adventure Center in snowshoeing at Cuyahoga Valley National Park. We will teach participants how to snowshoe and then hike for a couple of hours in the park. Snowshoes and transportation are provided. You will meet us at the Rec. Center.  We will still hike if there is no snow! Transportation is provided.

          • Cost: $10 

          Towner’s Woods Day Hike

          Participants will have the opportunity to hike a 3.3 beginner hiking trail in Towner’s Wood Park. Towner’s Woods Park Trail is a 3.3 mile, moderately trafficked, loop trail located in Ravenna, Ohio that features a great forest setting, beautiful view of Lake Pippen, and is good for all skill levels. No prior experience is needed. The fee includes transportation, equipment and instruction.

          Logtown Climbing Trip

          Enjoy a day of outdoor climbing at Logtown. Tucked away on the eastern edge of Ohio in the little village of Lisbon, is a small rock climbing crag by the name of Logtown. This once active rock quarry is now home to one of the only places to lead climb in the entire state. With routes ranging in grades from 5.3 to 5.12d, as well as a mix of bouldering, sport climbing, and trad climbing, there is a little something for everyone. This trip is great for all experience levels from beginner to experienced. The fee includes transportation, equipment, and instruction.

          Pennsylvania Backpacking Trip

          Want to go backpacking outside of Ohio? Come join the Adventure Center on an overnight spring backpacking trip on Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail at Ohiopyle State Park. This trail is part of the Potomac Heritage Trail and is very celebrated for its beautiful terrain, views, and beauty in the mountains and along the Allegheny River. We will be hiking around 20 miles, spending 2 nights camping and hiking anywhere from 5 - 10 miles a day with 35 or more pounds on our backs. Get ready for some fun! The fee includes transportation, equipment, meals, and instruction.

          • Difficulty: Level 2 - Hiking experience preferred, moderate physical exertion

          Black Squirrel Classic-O Spring Orienteering Event

          Calling all runners, hikers, geocachers, and those who just like to explore the outdoors!   In conjunction with the Northeastern Ohio Orienteering Club, we are pleased to bring you the Black Squirrel Classic-O Spring Orienteering Event!  This event will challenge 
          participants on one of five different courses, each varying in difficulty and distance.  Control locations can be found using a map that will be provided and an optional compass. A Classic Orienteering course will challenge you to find all of the controls on the chosen course in the order shown on the map! 

          New check-in location this year will be at the SRWC.  Check in will begin at 11:30 a.m. and the course will close at 2:30 p.m.  The course is entirely on the KSU Kent campus, with the start and finish located in front of the SRWC.           Park Clean-Up Volunteer Event

          What better way to celebrate Earth Day than to give back to the Earth? Join us in a volunteer event cleaning up trails at Cuyahoga Valley National Park as a way to give back to nature! Together, we can keep our beautiful backyard looking pristine!Transportation is provided.

          Observing the Night Sky

          Come learn about the night sky! If you’re someone who is amazed at the sky, loves to 
          stargaze, or is interested in learning more about astronomy, this is a great place to start! We will point out and discuss different objects in the night sky and share constellation stories. It’s a great way to relax, learn more about a fun subject. Transportation is provided.

          Hocking Hills Camping & Hiking Trip

          Want to explore Hocking Hills State Park in beautiful southern Ohio? Join us in some 
          hiking, exploring waterfalls, and camping. Hocking Hills provides a variety of recreational opportunities in a splendid natural setting. Towering cliffs, waterfalls and deep 
          hemlock-shaded gorges lure the hiker and naturalist and serve as a backdrop for this trip.

          West Virginia Climbing Trip

          Want to spend your weekend climbing outdoors? Join us in West Virginia as we climb, hike, and camp in The Meadow River Gorge. This quieter section of the New River Gorge area is known for its wildly fun and unique climbing and hiking. There is a range of routes along this climbing area so there will be great opportunities for those who are new to climbing, or looking for more of a challenge! The natural beauty of the gorge is 
          breathtaking with a great view of the river and some beautiful trails and walls. We will spend each night camping, and each day climbing and/or hiking. The fee includes 
          transportation, equipment, meals, and instruction.

          • Location: The Meadow River Gorge, West Virginia - meet at the SRWC
          • Cost: $90

          Hike & (SPIN) Bike

          Join us on a relaxing & educational hike & SPIN bike trip! We will meet at the SRWC and go on a short SPIN bike ride to Franklin Mills Riveredge, and then hike back to Kramer Fields. On the hike, we will share some basics on local flora & fauna, the environment, history, etc. It will be a nice and relaxing way to get moving, get some fresh air, and learn about nature! Transportation is provided.

          • Location: Kramer Fields & Franklin Mills Riveredge - meet at the SRWC
          • Cost: $20

          Cuyahoga River Kayaking Trip

          This trip will be held locally on the Cuyahoga River. We will meet at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center (or you can meet us at Kramer Fields - just let us know ahead of time!). From there, we will paddle to Brust Park in Munroe Falls.  We will then take the shuttle back to the Student Recreation and Wellness Center. A staff member will be with you on the water for the entire trip. The trip is 4.0 miles long, is beginner friendly and no prior experience is needed. The fee includes transportation, all equipment and instruction. There is a three participant minimum to run this program.

          • Cost: Students $30, Non-students $35

          Full Moon Float Trip

          Many people have gone kayaking, but have you ever gone kayaking under a full moon? Here’s your chance to do so on a peaceful and serene lake right down the road from Kent. Enjoy a beautiful sunset, relax in nature, and let your worries drift into the night.
          Transportation is provided.  You will meet us at the SRWC. 

          • Date & Time: Friday, May 5 & Saturday, May 6 from 7 - 10 p.m. (weather permitting)
          • Location: Wingfoot Lake State Park - meet at the SRWC.
