Creating Privacy During ‘Sex Week’

State University’s Kent Interhall Council's (KIC) annual Sex Week provided resources and education to students about safe sex.

Eighty-six percent of college students have had between one and ten sexual partners, with 10% confessing to more than 15 partners, while the remainder reporting having zero partners, according to an article by Seeker.

KIC and Flash Activities Board (FAB) partnered to create “Hang On: We're Gettin' it On!,” a Sex Week event to combine students’ love of crafts with fulfilling a serious need.

“KIC had an interest in hosting a craft program for sex week, and we do a lot of craft events,” said Jillian Mt.Castle, junior special education major and president of FAB. “We started planning this event over the summer and came up with the idea of doing privacy hangers and having students paint them.”

The privacy hangers serve as a way for students to communicate with their roommates nonverbally.

“We realize that sex happens on campus, and it can be a little awkward with a roommate,” said Caleb Strack, senior accounting major and executive director for KIC. “So it’s relevant to make a privacy hanger to put on your door to show your roommate you need some time for whatever you're doing in the room.”

Students have the option of writing whatever they need on the hangers such as, “in class,” “busy” and “don't knock.”

“I think this is a fun way to incorporate sex week, but also it gives students opportunity to paint whatever they want on it,” Mt.Castle said. “It doesn’t have to be related to sex if they don't want it to be, but if they want to there’s also that option.”

Following this event was Ally Training in the Kent Student Center and the annual Sex Week Drag Show in the KSC Ballroom and Ballroom Balcony.

“There are many misconceptions about our sex week,” Strack said. “We aren't in any way telling students to go have sex. We just are understanding that it does happen. We're at college, and we want students to be as safe as possible.”

Other events that took place in honor of Sex Week included:

  • Condoms on the K and Boo Bash

  • Sex in the Dark

  • A self-defense class before the “Hang On: We're Gettin' it On!,” event

  • Greendot, Ghouls Just Want to Have Fun, Monkey Pox and LGBTQ+ Sexuality-Tea and Sex Bingo with KIC and FAB

  • Understanding Sexual Integrity and Sextoberfest
