Kent State Magazine: Empowered by Education

Pacifique Niyonzima lost most of his family during the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Now he is earning a graduate degree in higher education administration at Kent State so he can give back to his native country.

This pursuit of education helped Rwandan genocide survivor Niyonzima find family and focus in America. Now, this Kent State grad student's purpose is to empower young people through higher education.

Now twenty-four years after the Rwandan genocide, Niyonzima returns to Rwanda this summer to intern with the vice chancellor of the University of Rwanda as part of his graduate studies in higher education administration—and to start giving back to his native country.

Read his story and watch a short video in the Spring/Summer 2018 issue of the Kent State Magazine. https://www.kent.edu/magazine/Pacifique.
