Winter Break Housing
Things to know about winter break:
- Students will not have access to residence halls during Winter Break, but students can leave their belongings in their rooms. Students should make sure they take all items they would need during the break!
- Meal Plans are not active and dining choices on campus are limited during the break. Visit the Dining Services webpage for break dining information.
- The residence halls close at 7 pm on Friday, December 18.
- Your RA will provide more in-depth information concerning winter break and hall closing procedures at a closing floor meeting before finals week. Please plan to attend this meeting.
Winter Break Housing FAQ
Can I stay in my residence hall room during winter break? What do I do if I do not currently live in one of the winter break buildings?
The residence halls officially close at 7 p.m. the Friday of finals week. Certain buildings will stay open as winter break halls. Residents currently living in one of the winter break residence halls will be able to stay in their current room; however, in order to do so, these residents must fill out a winter break housing application by December 1 at 5 p.m.
What staff members will be working with winter break housing? What are the Security Aide program’s hours during winter break?
Winter break housing is overseen by a winter break Residence Hall Director who maintains office hours in the Residence Services main office in Korb Hall. Additionally, winter break RAs will live in the various winter break halls. There will be an RA on duty each night of winter break. The contact number for the RA on duty will be posted in the lobby of each winter break building.
What are the Security Aide program’s hours during winter break?
Security Aides will be on duty each night of winter break. During winter break, Security Aides will be on duty between 8 pm and 2:30 am. The number to contact security is 330-672-7004.
How much does winter break housing cost?
Winter break housing is billed at a nightly rate of $35.
Eligibility to Stay over Winter Break
Students are only eligible for winter break housing if they currently have a housing assignment for the fall semester and spring semester.
Students who are withdrawing or studying abroad for the spring semester or who are graduating in December are not eligible for winter break housing.
New students to campus, who did not live on campus during the fall semester, will be able to move into their rooms on Saturday, January 16, 2016. New students will first need to check in at their Area Desk to receive their room key.
Spring Semester Early Arrival
The official day the residence halls will reopen after break is the Sunday before classes, January 17, 2016. Residents needing to arrive before this date can register for early arrival. The earliest a student may plan for early arrival is Saturday, January 16, 2016. There is a $35 nightly early arrival fee.
What do I need to do in order to stay on campus during winter break?
In order to stay in winter break housing, you must fill out a winter break housing application. Submitting an application does not guarantee a winter break housing assignment. Applications will be processed based on current housing assignment, reason break housing is needed, and in the order that they are received. Submitting a winter break housing does not guarantee a winter break housing assignment; the availability of winter break housing is limited by the availability of vacant rooms in the winter break halls.
If I am not staying on campus for winter break, when I can return to my residence hall?
The residence halls will reopen for the spring semester on Sunday, January 17, 2016. Monitor the announcements on the Residence Services homepage for further details.
What are the hours for the area desks during winter break?
During winter break, the Area Service Desks are closed. The Reception Desk in the Residence Services main office in Korb Hall is open during normal business hours Monday through Friday - unless the University is closed for a holiday. The winter break residence hall director can be contacted at 330-672-7000.
What do I do if I am living on campus during winter break and I get locked out of my winter break room?
If you become locked out of your room during winter break during business hours, you will need to contact the break hall staff in the Residence Services main office in Korb Hall at 330-672-7000. If you become locked out during non-business hours you can reach a break staff person on duty by calling the winter break duty phone. This number is posted near entrance doors to each break building and in the Korb Hall lobby area.
How do I contact the RA-on-duty if there is a problem during winter break?
During business hours you may contact winter break staff through the Residence Services main office at 330-672-7000. During non-business hours you can contact winter break staff through the posted winter break duty phone number. This number will be posted in all winter break buildings near the entrance doors and in the lobby.

What do I do if I am not returning to the residence halls after the fall semester?
If you are not coming back to Kent State University for the spring semester (because of graduation, transfer, withdraw, etc.) you need to contact your Residence Hall Director before finals week in order to schedule a checkout appointment. You will be able to check out during finals week within 24 hours of your last exam or Saturday if you are participating in graduation.
If you decide not to return as a student for the spring semester and have not officially checked out of your residence hall, please call our main office at 330-672-7000 and ask to speak with the winter break RHD.
What do I do if I only need to stay until Saturday after finals week when the halls are scheduled to close at 7 pm on Friday night of finals week?
The residence halls close at 7 pm the Friday of finals week. Depending on extenuating circumstances, your Residence Hall Director may be able to grant you permission to remain in the hall for a short period of time after the halls have officially closed. Please visit your Residence Hall Director during their office hours to discuss your situation.
Will my room be inspected before or during winter break?
Residence hall staff members conduct a visual safety and security inspection inside all student rooms after the halls have officially closed for break. Approximately two weeks before break, your Resident Assistant will hold a closing floor meeting. During this closing meeting, your Resident Assistant will provide you with a list of the safety and security issues that staff members will be visually checking for during the closing process. During visual inspections, staff are instructed not to open drawers or closets or search through personal belongings and will observe only those things which are in plain sight in the room.
When do residence halls open for the spring semester?
The residences halls will open for the spring semester on January 17, 2016. For students needing to arrive before this date, you may register for early arrival.
Please note that because early arrival dates are outside of the current housing contract, there is an additional charge for early arrival of $35 per night.
