Kent State University mourns the loss of student-athlete Jason Bitsko, who died unexpectedly Wednesday, Aug. 20.  Bitsko was found unresponsive in the bedroom of his off-campus apartment shortly before 9 a.m. Police believe he passed away from an undetermined medical issue.

Kent State University President Beverly Warren, Athletic Director Joel Nielsen, and Head Football Coach Paul Haynes spent a cold Tuesday afternoon at Dix Stadium after taking part in the Ice Bucket Challenge, a national campaign aimed at increasing awareness and contributions for ALS – Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, better known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Warren accepted the challenge that was tweeted Aug. 13 by Rebecca Windover, an assistant residence hall director whose father-in-law has been battling ALS for more than a year.

Before the fall semester starts on Aug. 25, new students are invited to participate in Welcome Weekend, a four-day orientation program that ran Aug. 21-24 and helped students familiarize themselves with the Kent State University community. The events during the weekend served as an opportunity for students to transition into the university environment and learn about the academic and social opportunities that exist at Kent State.

Each August during freshman move-in day, Kent State University faculty, staff and students volunteer to assist incoming freshmen get settled into their new university accommodations. To make the experience more fun and welcoming, the Kent InterHall Council sponsors the Movers and Groovers program. Freshman move-in day took place on Thursday, Aug. 21. A host of volunteers welcomed students and parents, and assisted with heavy lifting. The Kent State president’s Cabinet also volunteered to help this year.

Kent State University’s 18th Aviation Heritage Fair will take place Saturday, Sept. 13, from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Kent State University Airport, located at 4020 Kent Road in Stow, Ohio. The fair, a celebration of aviation education past, present and future, is presented by Kent State’s Aeronautics Program.

WKSU has named veteran journalist Andrew Meyer as the station’s next news director. His roles include managing WKSU reporters and working with senior staff to set coverage priorities and build relationships within the Northeast Ohio community. The WKSU news staff currently comprises seven full-time reporter/producers stationed in the station’s main broadcast facility in Kent, Ohio, and satellite studios in Cleveland, the Cultural Center in Canton and downtown Akron.

A new company formed by a Kent State University researcher and inventor will market a technological innovation – flexible, electrically conductive transparent films – that can be used in electronic devices, including smart phones and touchscreens, and in windows that switch from transparent to opaque to block light.
