Sigma Gamma Epsilon

Sigma Gamma Epsilon (SGE), is a nationally recognized honorary society for the Earth sciences. Membership requirements consist of a 3.0 GPA in Geology, a 2.75 overall GPA, and at least 10 credit hours of earth science classes.

Our Chapter here at Kent State (Gamma Zeta) has been active since 1965. Our main order of business is the assembly and sale of grain size folders to Forestry Suppliers and Geological Society of America; we provide Field Camp scholarships and graduate research funding with the money we raise through sales.

New initiates are required to pay a one-time $55 fee for lifetime membership. When you join, you receive an official shingle with your name printed on it, an official membership card, and enameled insignia pin. At graduation, you may purchase honor chords or a stole to be recognized as an SGE member. Our official colors are gold, silver, and blue. You can list your affiliation on your resume and it lets employers know that you carry at least a B-average and were active within your organization. Please visit www.sigmagammaepsilon.com for more information and to check out the society’s journal, The COMPASS.

We hold weekly meetings in McGilvrey Hall to make our grain size folders. We provide food (pizza, sandwiches, etc.), drinks, and music. If you’re unfamiliar with the folders, they contain sediments in various sizes/roundedness and are used to identify and describe sedimentary rocks. The Gamma Zeta chapter has been producing them for over 40 years!

Our advisor is Dr. Danial Holm, a distinguished structural geologist and current chair of the Department of Earth Sciences.

We host several social events throughout the year. Each Fall we host the SGE Ice Breaker in downtown Kent, where students can meet their peers and professors. Later in the semester we sponsor the Cross-cultural Thanksgiving meal in November. We have also participated at several public education outreach events at the Cleveland Natural History Museum and local Kent Free Library. We hope to help students feel a sense of community within the department as well as foster academic achievement.

Sigma Gamma Epsilon is an honor's society for Geology and Earth Sciences. We are the Gamma Zeta Chapter of Kent State University. SGE is dedicated to professionalism and the academic achievement of our members. We also provide scholarships!
