Get Ready to Join Your Golden Flash Family at KSU Kickoff! 

All new 2021 incoming students and students who began their KSU journey during the 2020-21 academic year are invited to KSU Kickoff. (This includes transfer students and students with commuter status) During this one-of-a-kind welcome celebration, you will engage in four days of activities and events that will help you become more familiar with the Kent State University community, faculty and staff, make new friends and prepare to start off the fall 2021 semester. Some events are required to ensure that you start the semester successfully, while other events are optional based on your interests and needs.


KSU Kickoff takes place directly following Move-In Week and runs from Sunday, Aug. 22 until Wednesday, Aug. 25. During KSU Kickoff 2021, students can expect to participate in a safe and engaging experience.

All KSU Kickoff events and the staff and students who participate in them will adhere to Kent State’s Safety Principles

Information Regarding Required Events 

The following events are required for all new incoming students: (this includes first-year and transfer students with residential or commuter status

  • KSU Kickoff Check-In | Sunday, Aug. 22 | 9:00 a.m.- 9:00 p.m. | Preferred check-in times vary based on your Move-in date. Commuter students can check in at any time after 11:00 a.m. 
  • Dean's Welcome | Monday, Aug. 23 | 9:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. | Locations vary based on college. 
  • Convocation | Monday, Aug. 23 | 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. | Students will be escorted from their Dean's Welcome to the Convocation site.
  • First-Year Student Lunch | Monday, Aug. 23 | 11:30 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. | Students will be dismissed from Convocation to grab free lunch before heading to their service project location.
  • First-Year and Transfer Student Day of Service | 1:00-4:00 p.m.| Service Site Locations Vary. Choose yours here!
  • Your First FYE Class and Common Conversation Experience | Tuesday, Aug. 24 | 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.| Locations and times vary based on your college and will be provided during KSU Kickoff Check-in. 
    • If you registered for a remote section of the DKS: First-Year Experience course (FYE), this experience will also be remote. 
    • Transfer students not registered for FYE, are not required to attend but will be invited to an optional section. 
  • Blastoff! | Wednesday, Aug. 25 | 5:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. | This event is outdoors. While attendance is not enforced, it is strongly encouraged to attend this event.

The following events are strongly encouraged for students attending KSU Kickoff who began their KSU journey during the fall 2020 or spring 2021 academic year

  • KSU Kickoff Check-In | Any time between 9:00 a.m.- 9:00 p.m. | First 150 students will receive a special t-shirt!
  • This is Kent State! | Wednesday, Aug. 25 | 3:00 - 4:00 p.m.| Register Now!  Advanced registration is required. Food will be provided! 
  • Blastoff! | Wednesday, Aug. 25 | 5:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. | This event is outdoors. While attendance is not enforced, it is strongly encouraged to attend this event.

All other KSU Kickoff events are optional but will play a critical role in helping you to meet new people and make connections to the university. Some events even offer cash prizes and cool giveaways! Check out the KSU Kickoff Events schedule for details. Please note, some events require advanced registration. 

Prepare for KSU Kickoff! 

To prepare for KSU Kickoff you should:

  • Download DKS Mobile from your app store

  • Complete your required Common Conversations video reflection and respond to two reflections no later than Aug. 22

  • Don't sweat the rest! At check-in, Student Success Leaders (SSLs) will help you navigate all things KSU Kickoff and find your first FYE class meeting location. (Meeting locations during KSU Kickoff vary by college and are not in the same location that your class will meet during the semester.)

Move-In and/or KSU Kickoff Preparation

All first-year students should continue to use the DKS Mobile app during Move-in Week and KSU Kickoff. The DKS Mobile app is the app you used to guide you through DKS New Student Orientation and contains the content necessary to keep you informed of important information and help you make the most of your KSU Kickoff experience.

The Common Conversations and Community Impact Dialogue shared experience is required for all first-year students. This experience will take place during KSU Kickoff where you will meet together as your First Year Experience (FYE) course section.

If your FYE class meets in person, this experience will be in person. If your FYE class meets virtually, this experience will be a synchronous meeting.
