Student Spotlight: Sarah Hayden

Meet Sarah Hayden!

“When I began the college search process as a transfer student, I knew I did not want to go into a big city to get a degree in fashion. I wanted to have a great college experience, however, I still wanted to get a degree from a world-renowned program,” said Sarah. Kent State was the right fit for Sarah’s goals. The School of Fashion requires students to study abroad, obtain internships and select a minor. These requirements give students the tools to succeed in their field.

Major: Fashion Merchandising

Minor: Marketing

Graduation: August 2025

Hometown: Greensburg, Pennsylvania

Why did you choose to study fashion merchandising?

I chose to study fashion merchandising because of my hometown job! I work as a stylist at a bridal and prom store. Working there opened my eyes to the idea of making a career in fashion. While working there, I have had the opportunity to go on buying trips, manage social media channels, style customers and so much more!

In your time at Kent State, what are some accomplishments you are proud of?

I am proud to say that I am a Kent State School of Fashion Social Media Coordinator. This opportunity has allowed me to grow so much here! In the fall I was invited to meet and have a luncheon with the Board of Trustees and Dr. Krifa. I am also getting the opportunity to talk on a panel to admitted Fall 2024 Students. I am a PR Coordinator for the Kent State Annual Fashion Show. I also have successfully secured two internships now, one in corporate and one in small business.

What would you like to do after graduation?

I am planning on going into the corporate world in the buying and planning department or product development. By the end of my career, I would like to own my own bridal and formal wear store.

What clubs and organizations are you involved in on campus?

I am a member of the Fashion Student Organization on campus along with the Kent State Annual Production Team.

How has your school or program made a difference to you?

The Kent State School of Fashion has given me so much confidence in my skills. Since I had experience doing things such as trend forecasting and buying and planning merchandise, having the educational background to back up my experience has been great. I also am so thankful for the professors and faculty that have changed my life. They are all so supportive and really want the best for the students.

What are things you love about Kent State, your major or your school?

I love that the School of Fashion at Kent State University sets you up for success after graduation. You will have a well-balanced resume since it is required to study abroad and complete an internship. There are also so many clubs to get involved in. One of my favorite things about Kent State is the faculty. I have never met people who wanted me to succeed more than they do.

What are your favorite campus events?

I love any event that the School of Fashion is hosting! Any type of panel or networking events are my favorite.

What is your best memory at Kent State?

My favorite memory at Kent State has been the Annual Fashion Show last year. I had the opportunity to sit and take social media content for the school. It was incredible to see all the hard work and dedication the designers put into their work. The models did a fabulous job showing off the designer’s work.

What is your favorite part of working on campus?

My favorite thing about working an on-campus job has been networking with faculty within the school. I have gotten to know so many professors and faculty that I have not had the opportunity to take a class of theirs just from doing social media. This job has also pushed me out of my shell as I am constantly reaching out to students, faculty, and alumni.

Do you have advice for others?

Take every opportunity that you get and don't be afraid to go out of your comfort zone. Also, as a Fashion Major, I highly recommend working at a small business to learn various aspects of the industry before concentrating on one aspect!
