Kent State's School of Journalism and Mass Communication (JMC) provides its students with a strong foundation to achieve their future goals in the rapidly changing media industry.  Kent offers a variety of courses within three areas of study in the JMC graduate program.

The masters program requires a minimum of 36 hours (including 6 hours for the thesis option or 3 hours for the non-thesis options). Students must:

  • Maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA in all coursework.

  • Choose between two capstone options: writing a thesis or preparing a professional project. 

  • Earn a minimum of 6 hours in Thesis I (one) or a minimum of 3 hours in the non-thesis option.

  • Not take more than four hours of workshop credit to count towards the degree.

  • Complete at least 50 percent of coursework at the 60000 level. Up to six hours completed as a non-degree or guest student may count toward the degree.

Students may be eligible for up to nine hours of transfer credit from another graduate program at KSU after completing a transfer of credit application, which must be approved by the Graduate Coordinator and/or the Graduate Studies Committee.


Students enrolled full-time in the Kent JMC graduate program are eligible for paid graduate assistantships. In order to be eligible for an assistantship, your application must be received before March 1. 


  • Have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0

  • Have a composite GRE score of at least 300

  • Submit a completed online Kent State University Graduate Application form. Forms are located on the Research and Graduate Studies web site.

  • Write a statement of purpose explaining why you are interested in graduate studies at Kent JMC and submit it online at the site above.

  • Send original copies of all college transcripts to the Division of Research and Graduate Studies.

  • Submit online recommendations from three people, at least one who is a professor and who was your instructor.

  • Have a TOEFL score of 100 or more for international students.

Need-based financial aid and grants are available through Kent State University Student Financial Aid. We also offer many scholarships for current JMC students.


  • To be considered for graduate assistantships, applications must be submitted before March 1 of each academic year.
  • The deadline to be admitted for Fall Semester is July 1.


You may apply for Graduate Admission through the University Online Graduate Application. You may also apply for graduate admission as a Guest Degree Applicant by submitting a Guest Application. Please note that guest students do not earn a degree and can take a maximum of six semester hours with this status.
