Military Students
Military Friendly
Kent State University is an Ohio Military Friendly Institution and awards college credit for your military learning. The Credit Transfer Office prioritizes evaluations of all Joint Services Transcripts to ensure that our active military and veteran students are able to make prompt decisions about their education plans and schedules.
Credit Options:
Military Learning and occupations
For college credits, Military Learning must be recognized by the American Council on Education (ACE), who determines credit recommendations. ACE provides an online guide at https://militaryguide.acenet.edu showing their credit recommendations. These are reflected on a Joint Services Transcript, or "JST", which is a document that translates your military experiences and occupations into college credits for colleges and universities. To earn Kent State University Credit, submit a request to send your Joint Services Transcript to the Kent State Admissions office.
Community College of the Air Force
We partner with the Community College of the Air Force to provide general education courses for their CCAF degree, and ensure that service members are able to transition their Associate degree to a Bachelors at Kent State.

Exam Credits
DANTES Standardized Subject Tests (DSST) are eligible for college credit based on your highest score. See our credit chart here. (coming soon!)
CLEP exams taken through the DANTES program are eligible for college credit based on your highest score. See our credit chart here.
Defense Language Proficiency Tests (DLPT) are eligible for foreign language credits based on your highest score. Submit a request to the DLIFLC to request your official score report to be sent to Kent State University for credit evaluation.
Ohio Values Veterans
The State of Ohio provides Military Transfer Assurance Guides (MTAG), which are courses and occupations that are reviewed by the Ohio Department of Higher Education for matches to courses within Ohio public institution curriculums and may count towards your major requirements. Consult with your academic program advisor to see how these credits may apply towards your major program. See Ohio's Credit Transfer Tool to see how your learning can transfer within Ohio.
Other Credit Options
The Defense Language Institute offers courses that are accredited by WASC, which is accepted for transfer credit. Submit your request to the DLIFLC to request your official transcript to be sent to Kent State University for credit evaluation.
Other military learning provided through other institutions may be eligible for ACE recommended college credits. Check the free online ACE credit guide to see if your school has been reviewed for college credits. ACE transcripts can be ordered if credit is available.
For those that don't have military courses or occupations on a Joint Services Transcript, you may still be eligible for college credits for your basic training. In lieu of a JST, you can send your DD214 form to the Admissions office of your admitting campus for evaluation of basic training college credits. However, we advise attempting to order a JST first for maximum credits.
VA Work Study
Kent State is an authorized site for VA Student Work Study and the Credit Transfer Office works with our CAVS office to host a work study position that can assist in answering questions about military credit for students, advisors and faculty.
