Mathematics
About
The goal of the COF program in Mathematics is to prepare Northeast Ohio students (including economically disadvantaged, underrepresented, first generation, and female students) for in-demand occupations in Ohio involving mathematics and mathematics education. The program strengthens career-linked college-level education benefiting students, industry, and the state as a whole. Funding decisions are made based on a combination of merit and financial need. The scholarships are awarded to promising incoming Mathematics and Integrated Mathematics students.
Students in the program attend a COF Math and Computer Science speaker series, work on research projects with faculty mentors, and present their results at a poster conference, organized jointly with other NE Ohio universities. Our program trains high quality future high-school teachers of mathematics with firm knowledge and fascinating insights gained from their Kent State experience. We invite our corporate partners and COF alumni to participate in our COF lecture series and poster conference.
Mathematics has been very successful in preparing graduates for in-demand careers involving risk management in the financial, insurance, energy, and medical industries. The need for actuaries and, more generally, risk analysts is projected to grow significantly over the next decade, particularly in Ohio due to the large number of major insurance companies, banks, and energy companies that have a presence in the state. The Integrated Mathematics Secondary Mathematics Teachers program at Kent State University is an essential component of any attempt to leverage STEM employment in Ohio. Graduates can have an enormous influence on recruiting students to enter the pipeline from high school to college. Integrated Mathematics graduates not only stay within the state, but also add significantly to the Northeast Ohio economy by obtaining teaching positions and performing substantial service to low achieving school districts.
Many of COF Mathematics alumni work at various companies in Ohio and around the country including Cedar Consulting, Bristol West Insurance Group, Farmer’s Insurance, Key Bank, National Interstate Insurance Company, Nationwide Insurance, National General Insurance, Progressive Insurance, Schwab Retirement Plan Services, Willis Towers Watson,NCA Financial Planners, LCC Consulting, Progressive Insurance, J.M.
