2022 Black History Month Artwork

Similar to 1970, when Black History Month was birthed at Kent State University, students led the planning efforts for our Black History Month celebration. A student led committee consisting of undergraduate and graduate student leaders, faculty, and staff conceptualized this year’s artwork for the Black History Month graphic. A student created the artwork. The design was inspired by the theme “Re-Education of Our History”. The color pallet selected represents the Pan-African flag and the History of the Black Heritage flag: these colors are red, black, green, and yellow. The student led committee wanted to ensure that the design represented the diaspora, thus, featuring logos from Black United Students and Kent African Student Association.

The border of this graphic contains a series of grey scale photos (black, white, and grey). Featured in these photos are our very own Kent State University heroes; faculty members who have passed within the last 18 months: Dr. Alene L. Barnes, Dr. E. Timothy Moore, and Dr. Edward W. Crosby. These individuals were instrumental in educating thousands of Kent State University students, alumni, and the Kent community as a whole. Each of these educators were vitally involved in KSU’s Pan-African Faculty and Staff Association, which is celebrating 50 years this year.

Finally, the graphic includes the link to the website where people can view the list of 2022 Black History Month events and learn more information.  Additionally, we include the newly minted hashtag, #BHMBirthPlace with an explanation that Black History Month began at Kent State University. We also have instructions on how to engage on social media using the hashtag.
