Meet Dylan Walker, a Design Innovation crew member who specializes in marketing and operations.

Dylan first applied to be a crew member because of his interest in the DI Hub’s makerspaces. “As an incoming freshman, at the time, I was like- this building seems insane,” the second-year marketing major said. “There's so much here that I want to personally learn about and be involved in. It's a super important building and initiative on campus.”

Starting with little to no experience, just a drive fueled by interest, Walker quickly made it a goal to learn how to use the array of technology available in the DI Hub.

“I was intimidated during my first tour of the building and was like, ‘What is this?’ I've never heard of a water jet in my life. That’s awesome that you can cut through six inches of solid steel- I love that, but it sounds super intimidating,” he said. “And I think it's intimidating to all, even after they learn the machines. I was very skeptical of my learning capabilities, and I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to grasp everything that's in the building.”

After working for a little over a year at DI, Walker now leads new collaborator orientations, guides students through their projects and creates unique pieces of his own with the machines. His favorite part of the job, however, is creating content for the DI social media accounts as part of the marketing and communications team. It’s an experience he said he wants to turn into a career post-graduation.

“At times I feel like I learn more through my job than I do in my major and that's due to the experience I get at DI,” said Walker.
