Arabic - Minor

Program Learning Outcomes

Graduates of this program will be able to:

1. Investigate, explain and reflect on Arabic cultures, values and perspectives.
2. Interpret, analyze and express opinions about texts and audio-visual materials in Arabic.
3. Communicate appropriately in Arabic in a variety of situations and for multiple purposes.
4. Exhibit a fundamental understanding of modern Arab societies, language, dialects, histories, religions and cultures.
5. Extend their studies of Arabic formally or independently for enjoyment, enrichment and professional advancement.

Admission Requirements

Admission to a minor is open to students declared in a bachelor’s degree, the A.A.B. or A.A.S. degree or the A.T.S. degree (not Individualized Program major). Students declared only in the A.A. or A.S. degree or the A.T.S. degree in Individualized Program may not declare a minor. Students may not pursue a minor and a major in the same discipline.

Prerequisites may be satisfied with demonstrated proficiency in Arabic.

Students who place below the 30000 level for Arabic courses must take ARAB 21201 and ARAB 21202.

Graduation Requirements

• Minimum 6 credit hours in the minor must be upper-division coursework (30000 and 40000 level).
• Minimum 6 credit hours in the minor must be outside of the course requirements for any major or other minor the student is pursuing.
• Minimum 50 percent of the total credit hours for the minor must be taken at Kent State (in residence).

Program Notes

• Students are strongly encouraged to participate in short-term, semester-long, or year-long study programs in an Arabic-speaking country. 
• Some courses in the Department of Modern and Classical Language Studies are offered on a rotating basis. Students should meet with their faculty advisor for Arabic each term.
