Kent State University at Salem horticulture students recently helped Associate Professor Chris Carlson take the first step toward creating a series of themed gardens on the grounds of the Salem Campus.

Children at Kent State University’s Child Development Center had the opportunity to interact with maintenance vehicles at the third Meet the Trucks event.

The first phase of the Summit Street: Building a Better Way Improvement Project is almost complete. Work began nearly a year ago on the stretch of Summit Street from Fraternity Circle to just past Loop Road, and that section of the road is expected to be finished by mid-November. 

The Kent State of Wellness Steering Committee has awarded 14 minigrants totaling more than $11,000 to departments and student organizations with creative proposals to enhance the culture of health and wellness at Kent State University. The program supports Kent State President Beverly Warren’s Strategic Roadmap and Kent State’s initiative to create an environment that enhances the health and wellness of all Kent State students, faculty and staff.

The Postal Regulatory Commission approved the U.S. Postal Service’s request for a change in postage rates effective Jan. 22, 2017. Some of the highlights include:

• New first-class stamp rate will increase to 49 cents
• Free “second ounce” will now be good up to 3.5 ounces for presort letters
• Basic flats will increase from 94 to 98 cents
• Standard Mail will now be called Marketing Mail (both commercial and nonprofit)

This September, the Kent State University Women’s Center held a donation drive, called Squirrel Away Food for the Pantry, benefiting the Pantry at the Women’s Center.

Kent State University’s Division of Information Services has introduced Kaltura, a video platform set to replace KSUtube by the end of the year. Kaltura was chosen because of its seamless integration with Blackboard Learn and in-depth features that benefit both faculty and students.

Information Services’ staff is facilitating the transition from KSUtube to Kaltura by migrating faculty videos from one platform to the other. More than 30,000 videos have been migrated to Kaltura so far, with many faculty and staff providing positive feedback.

More than 72,000 items in Kent State University Libraries’ May 4 Collection will be digitally captured with the funding assistance of a $119,443 matching grant, provided by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC). The digitization of these documents will allow users to explore these events and the context surrounding them through free, online access that will be located at www.library.kent.edu/special-collections-and-archives/nhprc.
