Transfer Student FAQs
Any student who has continued their education past high school is considered a transfer student. You must submit transcripts from each institution you have attended, whether or not you have earned credits or the school is regionally accredited. (Students coming from a different KSU campus are considered transitioning students.)

The Office of Admissions suggests you apply at least 6 months prior to the semester you plan on attending Kent State University. Your application is considered complete once your fee, transcript(s) and other required academic credentials are received. If you are currently taking courses when you apply, send a transcript with your in-progress work and another at the end of the term with your final grades.

To ensure that you are properly registered for your coursework at Kent State, it may be necessary for you to complete placement assessments for Math, English, Foreign Language and/or Chemistry. All assessments can be accessed via your "New@KSU/Student Tools" tab in your FlashLine account. More information regarding KSU assessment requirements can be found at Destination Kent Placement Information. Keep in mind that much of the information found here is geared toward freshmen who will be attending Destination Kent, Kent Campus. Transfer students may want to follow up with the advising office, Academic Advising at the campus they are attending with specific questions regarding assessment and registration. To be able to make the most of your initial advising appointment, you should complete any required or recommended assessments prior to your appointment or attendance at an orientation program.
Math - If you have not earned credit for or transferred a college-level math course, OR completed a remedial math sequence within the past academic year, you are required to take the ALEKS Math Placement assessment. However, depending on the math course for which you have earned credit and your major, it may be in your best interest to be assessed. Your should contact your Academic Advising unit for assistance in determining your placement needs. Transfer students should complete the assessment prior to attending the Transfer Kent State: Orientation, Advising and Registration program or meeting with an academic advisor. Although you will be able to view your score upon completion, you will need to discuss your placement and subsequent math course registration with an academic advisor.
English - If you have not earned credit for or transferred a college level English OR completed a remedial English composition sequence, you may be required to take the COMPASS Assessment. You will need to make an advising appointment with Academic Advising to take the COMPASS assessment. If you are not satisfied with your placement after completing COMPASS, you can take the Online Writing Challenge. Visit the Department of English for more information about the Online Challenge.
Foreign Language - If you have not earned credit for or transferred in credit for college level foreign language within the last academic year, you must be assessed via WebCape. Students in the majors listed below are required to complete the WebCape Foreign Language assessment:
- Majors in the College of Arts and Sciences
- Architectural Studies
- Art History
- Communication Studies - Global Communication Concentration
- Integrated Language Arts
- Music - Voice Performance Concentration
- Public Health - Global Health Concentration
Reading and Study Strategies - Transfer students admitted on academic probation may be required by their academic advisor to take the COMPASS assessment to determine eligibility for placement into the Reading and Study Strategies sequence. You can find out more information about Reading and Study Strategies, as well as available tutoring services, at the Academic Success Center.

Colleges and universities use various assessment tools and strategies to determine the best course registration for their students. The assessment tools Kent State has employed and the methods used to determine placement are geared toward the KSU curriculum. Therefore, KSU cannot use placement scores from other institutions.

Your acceptance letter will have information allowing you to immediately set up your FlashLine account at: http://www1.kent.edu/flashline/. This will give you access to registration, your kent.edu email as well as other important information. You will receive an email from the Transfer Center within 2 weeks of your acceptance with directions on accessing your transfer credit information. At that point, you should set up an advising appointment in your college office at www.kent.edu/academics/resources/Advising.cfm. Registration is based on the number of hours you have earned and posted to your Kent State academic record. Your registration status can be found in your FlashLine account under the "Student Tools" tab or by visiting the Priority Preregistration Entry Schedules by Term. Absolutely! KSU's Exploratory major was created for students who are unsure about a major. You will meet with an advisor in the Exploratory Advising Center to help define your major and career choices. Visit their website at explore.kent.edu. Yes! Students in any major with a minimum GPA of 3.3 are welcome to apply to join the Honors College. You may also be considered for a scholarship or have the opportunity to live in the Honors residence halls (Stopher and Johnson). The application deadline for fall semester is June 15; the application deadline for spring semester is November 15. Visit the Honors College web page at www.kent.edu/honors.

Your GPA from your previous school(s) will not transfer. However, you must be in good academic standing to be accepted into KSU with a GPA of 2.00 or better. If not, your academic record will be reviewed on an individual basis for possible admission into an alternative major. If you attended more than one institution, KSU will make a decision based on your combined GPA. Also, some majors have a selective admissions policy. If your transfer GPA does not meet that standard, you may be admitted into an alternative program until you establish the required GPA at Kent State.

The Graduation Planning System, or GPS, tracks student progress to graduation. It is comprised of the student's degree audit, which includes all requirements for earning a degree in the declared program. It also includes an individualized plan of study, the Plan, which is created in consultation between student and advisor and approved by the advisor, outlining in semester-by-semester format the requirements the student must complete in order to remain on track for graduation. Students are required to complete and submit their Plan during their first semester of study at Kent State, but can be updated as needed. Transfer Credit FAQs
If you believe there is a mistake on your transfer evaluation, please contact the Transfer Center at 330 672-8950. You may be asked to provide a syllabus and course description in order to re-evaluate transferred coursework.

KSU will accept all college level courses from regionally accredited institutions. Prior to the fall of 2005, classes taken in Ohio must have been passed with a "C" or better. Classes taken fall, 2005 and after within Ohio must have been passed with a "D" or better. All out of state coursework must have been passed with a "C" or better. This includes web-based courses. You can check www.transfer.org (USelect) for equivalencies with other Ohio and some surrounding states. You can check the Ohio Board of Regents website at http://regents.ohio.gov for statewide equivalencies (TAGS). You will receive notification once your official evaluation is completed (See FAQ #3).

Kent State accepts the following Regional accreditations; Middle States Association(MSA), Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), North Central Association (NCA-HLC and NCA-CASI), New England Association (NEASC-CIHE and NEASC-CTCI), Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC-ACCJC and WASC-ACSCU). If you are unsure whether your current school has one of these accreditations, there are a number of places you may be able to locate the school's status. They are: the school's website, the school's catalog, your transcript, the school's Registrar's office or the website of the above accrediting agencies.)

Kent State University awards college credit for basic military training. All eligible credits must be recognized by the American Council on Education (ACE), who recommends appropriate credit hours to be awarded. KSU also accepts DANTES Standardized Subject Test (DSST). To earn Kent State University Credit, request your military transcripts at https://jst.doded.mil.

Kent State awards AP and IB credit. If the credit appears on your transcript from a previous Ohio school, you may not need to provide any additional information. If your previous school does not include your AP credit on your transcript or if your AP credit appears on an out of state transcript, you should have original copies of your scores forwarded to Kent State. KSU's code is 1367 for AP credit.

For IB credit, request by mail only and you can download the form at International Baccalaureate or call 212 696-4464 to have your "Transcript of Grades" forwarded.

If you took your PSEOP coursework somewhere other than KSU, you will need to have an official transcript forwarded to the Office of Admissions at Kent State University (See FAQ #2). If you took the PSEOP at Kent State, your coursework is already part of your academic record.

Review KSU's Office of Academic Testing web page for information about which CLEP exams are offered at http://career.kent.edu/home/testing/index.cfm. If you are interested in Credit By Exam (CBE) visit the Registrar's web page at http://www.kent.edu/registrar/info/cbe.cfm. If you have earned CBE or CLEP from your current school, they will transfer to KSU if they appear on the transcript. If CLEP credits do not appear on your transcript, request your scores be sent to Kent State University, school code 1367.

If you have attended an accredited institution, KSU will accept international transfer credit where a "C" or better has been earned in classes completed prior to Fall, 2010 or a "D" or better starting Fall, 2010. For admission and other important information, international students should contact the Office of Global Education (OGE) at 330 672-7980 or visit www.kent.edu/admissions/international/index.cfm.

Kent State operates on the semester system and grants credits in semester hours. The academic year consists of two fifteen-week (plus a final exams week) semesters, fall and spring. There is also a summer term consisting of four sessions: a three-week intersession, two five-week sessions and an eight-week session.
If you are transferring from a school that is on the quarter system, it is helpful to know the hour conversion. A quarter-hour of work equals two-thirds of a semester hour. For example, if you have earned 36 quarter hours, it is the equivalent of 24 semester hours. Don't panic. While it seems that you have lost hours, you haven't since it takes fewer semester hours to complete a degree.
