Innovation Hub
AAM3T: Advanced Air Mobility Manufacturing, Maintenance, and Technology Innovation Hub
Vision
Revolutionizing air mobility, the AAM³T Innovation Hub integrates advanced manufacturing, maintenance, digital engineering, and technology innovation into a dynamic ecosystem. Rooted in Ohio’s aerospace heritage and strengthened through strategic partnerships, the hub will set new safety and efficiency standards, drive transformative breakthroughs, and position Ohio as the
national leader in advanced air mobility.
Goals and Objectives
Maintenance Standards
The Maintenance Operations Hangar is Ohio’s first dedicated facility establishing maintenance certification standards for advanced air mobility vehicles. In collaboration with the FAA and leading OEMs, the hangar will pioneer innovative testing protocols and integrate advanced manufacturing techniques to transform breakthrough technologies into industry-standard practices. This facility is instrumental for setting regulatory benchmarks while driving a safer and more efficient aviation ecosystem.
Advanced Training
The Advanced Aviation Maintenance Training Center develops highly skilled technicians to support advanced air mobility systems. Beyond power systems—such as batteries, electric motors, and hybrid technologies—and sophisticated software, the center encompasses advanced manufacturing methods, materials science, automation, and more, ensuring that Ohio’s workforce is fully prepared to meet the evolving challenges of next-generation aviation maintenance and innovation.
Center for Advanced Air Mobility
The Center for Advanced Air Mobility creates a synergistic environment where maintenance expertise, advanced manufacturing, and regulatory leadership converge. Featuring flexible lab spaces, state-of-the-art manufacturing capabilities, and hoteling facilities, this collaborative environment enables MRO companies, aviation manufacturers, and technology innovators to pilot breakthrough solutions and rapidly translate research into operational excellence.
Unique Opportunity for Ohio
Aviation is undergoing a significant transformation with Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) technologies—from electric and hybrid aircraft to VTOL vehicles and autonomous systems—but the critical infrastructure to support these innovations has been lacking. The AAM³T Innovation Hub fills this gap by integrating manufacturing, maintenance, digital engineering, technology development, and policy making to drive safety, efficiency, and innovation. Leveraging Ohio’s rich aerospace legacy and Kent State University’s expertise—along with strong industry, government, and community partnerships—this first-of-its-kind hub advances AAM capabilities, positions Ohio as the national epicenter for air mobility development and serves as a core element of the Statewide AAM Strategy, a priority of the Governor.
Economic Impact and Workforce Development
The Innovation Hub will transform Ohio’s economy—benefiting Northeast Ohio and the entire state—while evolving FAA certification standards. This initiative will revitalize local communities, boost investments, and secure Ohio’s advantage in the aerospace arena.
Attracting New Businesses: In partnership with the National AAM Center of Excellence (NAAMCE), the hub will attract MRO companies and aviation manufacturers nationwide, establishing Ohio’s as the premier destination for AAM development and certification.
Job Creation: The hub will generate more than 1,500 direct and indirect jobs, fueling growth in both the traditional aviation and AAM sectors.
Workforce Pipeline: The hub will train more than 50 technicians annually and offer more than 100 certifications each year, equipping professionals with expertise in next-generation AAM technologies and traditional aircraft maintenance.
Economic Activity: The hub will generate more than $300 million in economic activity in its first four years, driving infrastructure investments, capital expenditures, and local spending, while drawing federal, state, and private funding to bolster regional resilience.
Partners and Potential Partners
The AAM3T Innovation Hub will bring together a strong network of local, regional, and state partners, playing a vital role in securing investments and promoting Ohio as a leader in AAM Innovation. Kent State has a long history of working with many of these critical stakeholders and we are working with this network to secure partners in the hub to include government, industry, and non-profit organizations.
