Class Notes for August 2026

David Doane, Ph.D. '76, Whitehouse, OH, recently published "A Psychotherapist's View of Reality." The book, which is available on Amazon and Kindle, draws on insights from philosophy, psychology, spirituality and Doane's many years of practice as a psychotherapist in sharing his views and reflections on life issues. In it, Doane posits that our views warrant being taken seriously since we see the world and live our lives based on our  views. He recommends "A Psychotherapist's View of Reality" for those who are in a contemplative time or simply enjoy a thoughtful read.

Norma West, '82, Saint Louis, MO, recently retired after a long career in the theatre. After 12 years as a costumer and crafts artisan/dyer in theatres across the country, West became the third female member of IATSE Local No. 6 Stagehands Union, founded 1893,  and the first female officer a year later.  She served as the secretary/treasurer of Local 6 for 21 years, then the first female member of the executive board for three years.  She remains active in the labor movement as the treasurer of Missouri Women in Trades (MOWIT), and the local chapter of CLUW (Coalition of Labor Union Women). She has also been adjunct faculty at Washington University and Webster University and occasionally presents a short program about women in the labor movement. During retirement, West looks forward to spending more time in her garden, catching up on some reading and traveling with Rick, her husband of 32 years.

Sarah Greywitt, M.Ed. '14, Cleveland, OH, successfully defended her dissertation, earning a Ph.D. in cultural foundations.

Aron Kontorovich, '22, Brooklyn, NY, has been selected as a 2026 Yamaha 40 Under 40 Music Educator, a prestigious national recognition that celebrates innovative, impactful and emerging leaders in music education. This award highlights educators who are making meaningful contributions to their students, schools and communities through excellence in teaching, advocacy, creativity and leadership.

Being named to the Yamaha 40 Under 40 cohort reflects Kontorovich's commitment to fostering musical growth, creating inclusive learning environments and inspiring students to develop both their artistic abilities and personal confidence through music. Throughout my career, I have worked to expand access to high-quality music education while promoting collaboration, lifelong learning and student achievement.

This recognition is both a personal milestone and a testament to the support of his students, colleagues, administrators and community partners, and he is grateful for the opportunity to represent his profession and continue advancing the transformative power of music education.
