Good people,
The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program at Kent State University is a full time, 11 month graduate-level program that prepares teacher candidates for initial licensure in Ohio and many other states. The program accepts candidates interested in teaching Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies in grades 7-12. Additionally, the program prepares multi-age teachers (pre-K through 12) in Art, Dance, Foreign Language, and Health. This accelerated program is offered to recent bachelor and graduate degree holders, as well as career changing professionals, who now desire to become teachers.
The MAT program’s vision statement is designed to guide all aspects of the program and works to connect students, faculty, cooperating teachers and university supervisors. The program is committed to preparing teachers who are purposeful, deliberative decision-makers, and reflective practitioners committed to preparing citizens who contribute to the deepening of democracy, and promote the common good.
To become a teacher who does this, we expect our MAT teacher candidates to be:
- Thoughtful, reflective decision-makers;
- Curriculum designers and innovators;
- Lead learners/teachers and leaders in their schools;
- Advocates for students in their schools and communities;
- Justice- and equity-oriented for ALL (not just some) students;
- Committed to teaching students in urban, suburban and rural school contexts;
- Prepared to develop a rationale for teaching and maintain a commitment to rationale-based practice;
- Committed to promoting active student engagement in worthwhile learning;
- Committed to educating students to be participatory, democratic citizens; and
- Prepared to persist in schools as they exist while being committed to creating the types of schools they would like to see.
Scholarships Opportunities
The MAT program annually awards 10 NOYCE Scholarships in the amount of $15,287 to students with bachelor and graduate degrees in STEM fields. The NOYCE scholarships are designed to enhance the quality of secondary science and mathematics teachers. Scholarships cover full tuition for graduate students and support their teacher education coursework and student teaching internships.
