Honors Students Publish Regional Art and Literary Magazine

Brainchild, the art and literary magazine of the Mid-East Honors Association, launched its spring 2014 issue April 7.

Brainchild is an annual literary and arts publication comprised of exceptional work completed by undergraduate honors students from across the Mid-East Honors region.

This is the magazine’s 2nd year in publication but its first year featuring a regional submission base.

“Going into the project this year, I wasn’t really sure how the magazine would turn out,” said Aaron Hanlin, advisor to the magazine. “In the end, it represents a quality publication in both design and content and sets a precedent for future editions of the publication as a regional outlet.”

The publication is edited and produced by honors students at Kent State University. Students solicit and evaluate prospective submissions while gaining experience in the editing, layout, production, marketing, promotion, and distribution of the magazine.

The purpose of the publication is to foster the exposure of writers, essayists, poets, artists and photographers by crafting a product that has a powerful narrative laced throughout.

"I'm pleased with the way our submissions came together: how they comprise Brainchild itself and what they say about its future,” said Zach Nickels, editor of Brainchild. “We are looking to continue to push forward as an honors literary magazine, but our intentions are to establish a broader national profile and to exist with other top magazines within the literary arts world."

Undergraduate students enrolled in an Honors College or program in the Mid-East Honors Association region submitted literary and art work in the categories of fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, fine art and photography.

From their efforts, students received more than 200 submissions from more than 75 students representing more than 15 honors programs and colleges in the region.

The magazine’s website, brainchildmagazine.org, hosts additional content such as artwork and photography that wasn't published in the print magazine.

“While we received many submissions from students at several institutions, it is our hope that more students at Honors colleges and programs from throughout the region will submit pieces for publication,” said Hanlin.

Brainchild was initially distributed at the annual conference of the Mideast Honors Association, which was held April 4-6 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. MEHA has member institutions in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and West Virginia.
