Kent, OH – The School of Theatre and Dance at Kent State University will welcome Tony Award-winning choreographer Garth Fagan as the 2014-2015 Armstrong Family Visiting Artist Oct. 17 and 18. While at Kent State, Fagan will work with the Kent Dance Ensemble on his piece “Two Pieces of One: Green.” The piece will be performed during the Dance ’14: In Flow concert Nov. 21-23, 2014 and the Kent Dance Ensemble: 25 Years concert April 2-4, 2015.
Mr. Fagan has enjoyed an extensive career as a dancer and choreographer, creating more than 70 works for the theatre and concert stage. He won critical acclaim, as well as the Tony Award, for his choreography of Elton John and Tim Rice’s Broadway production of “The Lion King.” A trailblazer in the dance community for more than 40 years, Fagan formed his dance company, now know as Garth Fagan Dance, in 1970. Today, Garth Fagan Dance is an internationally acclaimed company, a school that annually provides dance training to over 450 students, and an innovative outreach program designed to serve the greater Rochester community through educational performances and dance instruction.
Garth Fagan’s visit to Kent State is made possible by the Armstrong Family Visiting Artist Series that was established in 2013 by Lawrence R. and Sandra C. Armstrong. The series allows the School of Theatre and Dance to invite a guest professional choreographer to work with students. Mr. Armstrong received a bachelor of science with a major in architecture in 1979 from Kent State University and a bachelor of architecture in 1980. He joined the Foundation Board of Directors in 2007 and recently completed his term as Chair. Mrs. Armstrong attended Kent State and studied theatre and dance.
