Gao Elected Vice President of University Aviation Association

School of Aeronautics director elected to national leadership role in collegiate aviation

Yi Gao, Ph.D., director of the School of Aeronautics in Kent State University’s College of Aeronautics and Engineering, has been elected vice president of the University Aviation Association (UAA), a national organization dedicated to advancing collegiate aviation education.

Gao will begin a two-year term as vice president Jan. 1, 2027, serving alongside President Ryan Wallace of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

The 20-member UAA Board of Trustees includes academic leaders and aerospace executives elected by their peers. Together, they help guide the association’s work to strengthen aviation education, address industry and workforce needs and prepare the next generation of aviation professionals.

A National Voice for Collegiate Aviation

For Gao, the appointment is an opportunity to contribute to that work at a national level while representing the experience and perspective he has gained throughout his career in aviation and higher education.

“I am deeply grateful for the trust of my colleagues across the collegiate aviation community and for the support of so many colleagues who have helped me along the way,” Gao said. “I look forward to serving UAA and working alongside aviation educators and industry leaders to strengthen collegiate aviation education and prepare students for the future of the profession.”

Gao’s election also brings national recognition to Kent State and the School of Aeronautics at a time of significant change across aviation and aerospace.

Leadership for a Changing Aviation Industry

As director of the School of Aeronautics, Gao leads programs preparing students for careers across an industry being transformed by emerging technologies, new approaches to air mobility and airspace management, and evolving workforce needs.

The aeronautics programs connect rigorous academics with applied learning through the Kent State University Airport, a modern collegiate aircraft fleet and advanced flight, air traffic control and simulation resources. Partnerships with industry and government further connect students and faculty with the needs and opportunities shaping aviation.

That foundation gives Gao a valuable perspective as he joins UAA’s national leadership. His election reflects both his professional leadership and Kent State’s longstanding commitment to collegiate aviation education.

“Dr. Gao’s election is a tremendous honor and a well-deserved recognition of his leadership in aviation education,” said John Sankovic, Ph.D., interim dean of the College of Aeronautics and Engineering. “UAA brings together leaders who are helping shape the future of collegiate aviation. Yi brings to that work a deep commitment to students, a strong understanding of the aviation industry and a collaborative approach that will serve the association and its members well.”

Gao and the other newly elected trustees will officially assume their positions Jan. 1.
