School of Communication Studies Office Overflowing With Gifts for a Family in Need

The School of Communication Studies adopted a family through the Battered Women’s Shelter of Summit and Medina Counties to help make a family’s holiday season a bit brighter.

"We wanted to do something meaningful so we 'adopted a family' and provided the children with shoes, clothing, bed sheets, pillows and more items that would improve their everyday life," said Elizabeth Graham, Director of the School of Communication Studies.

Throughout the month of December, the COMM faculty and staff purchased gifts for a family of five males in need of support. A tree in the main office was decorated with 50 paper ornaments, each featuring a "wish" of one of the five in the adopted family. Hoodies, Legos, Tupperware, pillows, clothes and shoes were popular items.

"We threw in a few surprises, too," said Jennifer Kramer, the COMM marketing director who organized the campaign. "We have such a caring community in the School of Communication Studies. I was overwhelmed by everyone's generosity. I know the family will be very thankful. I can't wait to drop off all of our gifts!"

The mission of the Battered Women’s Shelter is to lead the community in the prevention of domestic abuse by providing emergency shelter, advocacy and education throughout Summit and Medina County, all in an effort to break the cycle of abuse and help promote peace in every family. The Battered Women's Shelter of Summit and Medina Counties provides emergency services and supportive services to victims seeking to end family violence. The organization helps women, men and children who are in danger of physical, emotional and sexual abuse. Unlike other agencies that focus on victims of all types of crime, the Battered Women's Shelter is the only agency in Summit and Medina Counties that focuses on family violence, intervention and prevention.
