    Biography

Dr. Yin is an Associate Professor of Geography at Kent State University, where he heads the Remote Sensing and Land Science Lab (SensLand Lab). Before joining KSU in 2020,  He was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a senior researcher at the Center for Development Research (ZEF), University of Bonn in Germany.

Dr. Yin is an expert in remote sensing of land systems, integrating remote sensing imagery with interdisciplinary approaches to monitor environmental change. He is the principal investigator of projects funded by NASA, the National Science Foundation (NSF), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR). His work spans diverse topics—including armed conflict and its environmental impacts, cropland abandonment, grassland management, forest and wildfire monitoring, invasive species, and equity and environmental justice.  His recent research examining the impacts of armed conflicts on agricultural lands has been highlighted by media outlets such as CNN, BBC, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, among others. Ultimately, his goal is to promote sustainable and equitable land use practices that can benefit our natural environment and society.

He has published more than 50 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals. He serves as coordinator of the Global Land Programme (GLP) Working Group "Agricultural Land Abandonment as a Global Land-Use Change Phenomenon". In addition, he advises United Nations agencies, including UNEP and UNOPS, on disaster recovery, reconstruction, and environmental assessment.
