What it Means to Be a Pre-Major
Students admitted as AED-General are considered Pre-Majors.
Admission into the Bachelor of Science in Architecture (B.S. Arch) program and the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Interior Design program is highly competitive and selective, and all students undergo a holistic evaluation process. Holistic evaluation does not guarantee direct admission into the major. The following criteria are used:
- High school GPA
- Highest math completed
- ACT/SAT scores (if submitted, used only to support direct admission; not used punitiviely to deny admission to the program)
- CCP/AP/IB/Dual Enrollment coursework
As a pre-major, you are admitted to and are a student within the College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED). The path to complete your degree will look a little different for the first year compared to the roadmap provided on the University catalog. You will not start studio courses in your first semester. Instead, you will have the option to petition to take studio in a future semester.
Benefits of being admitted as AED-General Pre-Major
- You can transition to university life without the intensive time commitment of a graded studio course.
- You benefit from one to two semesters to establish a strong grade point average.
- You have one to two semesters to acclimate to campus and explore campus activities and organizations that interest you.
- You get an idea of what studio culture and studio projects are like before being enrolled in a studio.
Helpful suggestions for students in the AED-General Pre-Major
- Participate in the AED-General Workshop series that will give you a taste of studio culture and projects.
- Get involved in clubs and organizations; one related to your intended major and one other club.
- Work on your time management, academic, and organizational skills.
- Utilize University resources to strengthen your academic skills.
It is important that you meet with your CAED academic advisor during your first semester to ensure that you are academically on track and to discuss the petition process necessary to become a B.S. Architecture or B.A. Interior Design major.
