ADN Students Stock the East Liverpool Campus Food Pantry

A small group of nursing students took on a project with big results this semester: stocking Flash’s Food Pantry on the East Liverpool Campus.

The students began a campaign this semester to collect non-perishable food items, as well as personal hygiene items, and it was a total success. The shelves of the pantry are now filled with canned goods, cereal, rice, noodles, tuna, peanut butter, pancake mix, shampoo, soap, laundry detergent, baby food and much more.

Located on the basement floor of Purinton Hall, directly across from the elevator, Flash’s Food Pantry serves as a resource for students on the East Liverpool Campus who may need extra help acquiring these items.

Leading the way with this project were Kayley Black, Madison Cooke, Tori Cornell, Riley Grisez, Stacie King and Julian Maymon.

They are part of Alpha Delta Nu, a national nursing honor society of associate degree of nursing students. To be invited for membership, each student must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 and have received a grade of B or better in all of their nursing classes.

The final criterion for membership is to complete a service project in their last semester. They wanted to take on a project that benefited Kent State East Liverpool students and the Flash’s Food Pantry was the perfect fit.

The food pantry first opened on the East Liverpool Campus in 2019, led by Dr. Dan Dankovich, biology lecturer. During the COVID pandemic, however, items in the pantry were donated to local agencies and the shelves remained empty until this group of students refilled them with donations and items they personally purchased.

Personal hygiene items

The food pantry is open each Tuesday and Thursday, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for all Kent State East Liverpool students. There is no need for referral, nor do students need to show personal income information.

In the case of an emergency, the Pantry can be opened on an as-needed basis.
