Now that the semester is coming to a close and the air has grown cold, there was one event where Kent State students, faculty, parents, and alumni were able to gather together and celebrate; and that is Homecoming. At Kent State University, Homecoming allows the Golden Flash community to honor their university and celebrate what it means to be a part of Kent State. In writing this, I am beyond grateful to state that I had the opportunity to celebrate what it means to be a Golden Flash while being sponsored by Student Accessibility Services on this year’s Homecoming Court! I am so thankful for Student Accessibility Services and am proud to be sponsored by an organization that I care about so deeply. I first found Student Accessibility Services within the first few weeks of my freshman year when I applied to be a student employee; and, I can confidently say that my experience at Kent State University would not have been the same without finding student employment at this organization.

This year marked the first time Student Accessibility Services has ever sponsored a student on the Homecoming Court; and, I hope that it will not be the last. I took the opportunity I had to be on Homecoming Court to hopefully showcase to the KSU community that being connected with Student Accessibility Services is not something that students should not be ashamed of. Students that are connected with Student Accessibility Services should be granted the opportunity to see themselves—and something they are a part of —being celebrated; and, Student Accessibility Services sponsoring me on this year’s Homecoming Court was just one way to do so.

Homecoming took place on October 21st and the day was full of fun! On October 21st, there was a Homecoming Parade, various opportunities to tailgate, Kent State’s ever-so-famous kiss on the “K,” and of course the Homecoming game. Homecoming Week historically kicks off the Saturday prior to October 21st during the Annual Bowman Cup 5k Race and 1-Mile Run-Walk-Roll that takes place each year. Then, all week leading up to the day of the Homecoming game, there were plenty of events that students could take part in during Homecoming Spirit Week.

The experience I had on Kent State’s Homecoming Court was unlike any I had ever had. The group of young women that were selected for this year’s Homecoming Court were all so inspirational and truly deserved the recognition they received. Again, I am beyond thankful for Student Accessibility Services and the amazing opportunity this entire experience was.
