Social Security Employment Verification

Overview

All employees are required to have a social security number. The Social Security Administration requires an international student without a social security number to prove he or she has obtained an on-campus position, and show evidence of that employment, or a Social Security number will not be issued.

Step 1. Search for an on-campus position. To view openings, go to Handshake through Flashline. Login with your Flashline username and password, update your profile and upload a resume. Then you can begin searching and applying for positions.

To locate on-campus positions: Click on Jobs--> Click the On-Campus button at the top--> scroll down to see all currently available positions.

Apply to positions for which you are qualified. International students are not eligible for Work Study. Read the position descriptions carefully to ensure they are not limited to students with a federal work study award only.

Step 2. Once you have interviewed and received an offer of employment, your supervisor will complete and sign Section I of the Social Security Employment Verification Form. You will take this with you to the Office of Global Education (see Step 3.). The supervisor will also send you an electronic Offer of Student Employment Position Form, which you will sign online and print. For some graduate assistantships the offer letter may be presented on official campus letterhead.
