Induction Ceremony Recognizes News Members, Officers and Graduating Seniors

On Feb. 19, 2020, the Kent chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta, The National Honors Society for First-Year Success, held its induction ceremony for eligible members from the fall 2019 semester. At the start of the spring 2020 semester, all first-year, registered full-time students who met the qualifications of a 3.5 GPA or higher during their previous first semester at Kent State were invited to join the Kent chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta, and take part in the February induction ceremony.

The Dean of the Honors College, Alison J. Smith, delivered the keynote address to the attendees, and was also recognized as an honorary inductee, along with 276 first-year Kent State students, many of whom, were also members of the Honors College. This was the first year that 54 senior Alpha Lambda Delta members were recognized at the ceremony, receiving cords to be worn during commencement, signifying their membership in ALD.

Officers of the Kent Alpha Lambda Delta chapter for the 2019-2020 academic year were also recognized with medallions to be worn during commencement. Three members who received National Alpha Lambda Delta scholarship awards were also recognized during the ceremony. The winner of a $1,000 scholarship from ALD to study in Florence, Italy was Kaitlyn Wertz, a nutrition major, who is quoted in Alpha Lambda Delta’s annual Flame publication, stating that, “Studying abroad has always been my dream. It will be a new adventure and give me a deeper appreciation for global diversity and the world around me.” Wertz is currently completing her spring 2020 Kent State coursework at the Kent State Florence campus in Italy.

Alpha Lambda Delta staff advisor and Honors College advising coordinator, Lauren Huffman, explains that the number of Alpha Lambda Delta members on the Kent campus continues to grow each year, and that she is excited for the continued passion and involvement the members and officers show.

The Kent State University chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta was founded on Feb. 18, 1960, and continues to open doors for current members, while offering opportunities to help them stand out and be recognized.
