Greetings!
This time last year, we were caught up in the whirlwind of COVID-19 and facing challenges we never dreamed we would encounter. Because of the fortitude, dedication and sheer determination of so many, the Kent State Columbiana County campuses are set to emerge from this pandemic focused on the future like never before. We are developing strategies that build on the lessons learned through this pandemic as well as our renewed commitment to student success.
Despite huge obstacles, no one on the Kent State Salem or East Liverpool campuses stopped because of the pandemic. Faculty continued to teach; staff continued to support; students continued to learn. We did it differently, but we did it. Together.
And through it all, we learned how much we need technology to keep us connected and to deliver our services. We also learned that human interaction is important for creating energy and synergy in our buildings. We miss that.
But, spring is near – a time when we feel hope and see signs of new growth. The next few months will be busy for us as we finish another academic year and celebrate the successes of the last two semesters. Unfortunately, our awards programs and commencement ceremonies will most likely be held in virtual formats again this year. Nonetheless, we are planning ways to celebrate the achievements of our students and to recognize their success. They are quite deserving.
The lesson that I have learned through this crisis is that we always need to remember to focus on what matters most; taking care of ourselves and each other. To that end, I have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from the community. The COVID pandemic caused much anxiety, suffering and hardship for so many. Yet, many of you found it as a chance to demonstrate your care and commitment to these students and our campuses. Your kindness mattered and you had direct impact on the lives of our students. I am forever grateful and humbled by your support.
Again, thank you for your interest in the Kent State Columbiana County campuses. Please stay safe and I wish you a happy spring season as we prepare for the next exciting phase in our educational journey at the Kent State Columbiana County campuses!
Sincerely,
David M. Dees, Ph.D.
